Live in the moment

Introduction

How many people want to learn more about to live in the moment? Most people have a tendency to dwell on the past or worry about the future. How often do you find yourself thinking about what happened yesterday or what might happen tomorrow? Constantly revisiting the past and anticipating the future can make it difficult to enjoy the good things in your life right now.

We are always looking for a better moment than the one we are living, something more interesting, more exciting, more fulfilling. But when we live in our heads, we miss out, not only on the beauty and wonder of life but also on inner peace, contentment and the fullness of connection.

The gift of the present

Life can be thought of as having two doors: one leading to the past, the other to the future. The past is familiar but unchangeable; the future is uncertain and unknown. Fortunately, we hold the key to both doors: the present. Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is a mystery. Today is a gift, and that’s why it’s called the present.

The past cannot be changed, and worrying about it will not improve your life. The future is unpredictable, but the present is within your control. Crying over yesterday accomplishes nothing, but taking action today can shape a better tomorrow. Planning for the future is valuable, but a good plan implemented today is far more powerful than a perfect plan delayed. Learning to live in the moment allows you to appreciate life more fully and realize that the meaning of life isn’t something to chase, it’s something to experience right now.

Be grateful for what you have now

Part of living in the moment is practicing gratitude for what you have. If you constantly focus on things you don’t have, you aren’t taking the time to appreciate what you have at this moment. When you pause to notice the good in your life (health, family, friendships,..), you shift your focus away from what is missing and toward what is present. Gratitude teaches us that joy it is recognizing the blessings and the value of what is already here. With practice, gratitude becomes a habit allowing you to meet challenges with resilience and to live more fully in the moment.

Practice acceptance

Focus on accepting things as they are and not on how you want them to be. You cannot control everything around you. Practicing acceptance will help you to let go of the things in your life that are out of your control. We need to learn how to accept all moment, whether they are painful or joyful, whether we like them or not. We can remember that they will not last forever and that we can cope with them.

Find positive social support

Spending time with people who make you feel loved, happy, fulfilled; people who are supportive and positive. Being around people who bring out the best in you enriches your life.

Be mindful of everything you do

Focusing on little details and being mindful of everything going on around you will bring more present moment awareness into your life.

When was the last time you truly paid attention to the world around you?

Watch the sunrise on your way to work. Instead of scrolling through your phone while drinking coffee, savor the mug in your hands and the taste of the first sip. When walking outside, notice the birds, the wind, and the details around you rather than rushing to your destination. During conversations, pay attention to the other person’s expressions and tone instead of rehearsing your next words. Even in a restaurant, appreciate the music, the décor, and the atmosphere, not just the food. This may feel strange at first, soon you’ll start seeing the beauty that is all around you.

Take a break from social media

How many times have you been doing something else and found yourself checking social media? Social media has a way of pulling us out of the present and into a world of distractions and endless noise. Learning to disconnect helps you reconnect with real life, making you more present and aware.

The beauty of now

To truly live in the moment, appreciate where you are, what you’re doing, and who you’re with. Life is made up of everyday moments, and it’s important to remember that you’re living in your dreams right now. The moments you thought were no big deal at the time can turn out to be the best moments of your life.

When we settle into the present, we awaken to the richness of life. In the now, we find enjoyment, connection, and meaning, the very things we have been searching for all along. Living in the moment means living consciously, fully aware that each breath is a gift. Every second matters. Life is beautiful right now, embrace it.
